The day had dawned bright and cheerful. Clouds skittered silently by in the deep blue sky, occasional pockets of fluffy, white cotton. The weather had held nicely over the past few days and for that Avendal was thankful. Travelling from her home city to Lumiose would have been a horrible ordeal if it had been raining or, Arceus forbid, stormy. Now that she was finally here Avendal decided that the weather could do whatever it wanted. Nothing was going to spoil today. Today was the day that she would register as a Pokémon trainer and meet her first Pokémon partner.

Strolling along the path, neither rushing nor lollygagging, Avendal finally came to a stop at the doors to the Pokémon laboratory. She took a slow breath to steady herself then raised her hand and rapped on the door three times. "Hello?" she called out experimentally. There should be someone inside, but she did not want to be rude and barge inside without invitation.

A young, male assistant was watching over the front of the lab when Avendal walked in. Well...he was supposed to be watching it, but in reality, he was reclining in a wheeling chair and snoozing. He didn't wake up until the girl called out, startling him out of his seat. He tried to cover up his laziness by passing his jump off as excitement; the man put on a big smile and hurried over to the aspiring trainer.

"Ah, bonjour!" he called to her, his voice shaking a little with nerves. It was a good thing there were no supervisors around at the time; they were all out with the professor on one of their field trips or whatever they did when the lower ranking assistant were made to greet all the new trainers. "You're here for your starter Pokémon, right? Right this way, then, I'll help you out!" said the assistant, leading Avendal to the back counter where the six starter pokeballs were lined up in a computer.

As Avendal peered around the door she glanced around the lab. Her cursory inspection revealed the room to be empty and as such she was startled when a young man suddenly jumped up excitedly. "Bonjour monsieur," she replied, smiling cheerfully. "You surprised me. I didn't think anyone was here." The young woman stepped fully into the laboratory and closed the door behind her. "Are you the only one here today? That seems awfully lonely."

She nodded agreement to the man's statement, stepping in behind him and following him to the back counter. "That would be very kind of you." Her eyes wandered over the pokeballs as she considered the Pokémon which rested inside of each. "The only problem is... I'm still not sure which one I want to choose," she explained to the man apologetically. She had given the choice plenty of thought ever since the day that she had finally decided to leave home on a Pokémon journey but she had to admit that she was still thoroughly stumped.

The assistant smiled wryly when Avendal told him that she wasn't sure what Pokémon she wanted to choose. He was hoping that the new trainer would have already made her mind up, so that he wouldn't have to do much more work than giving her what she needed. Trying to help her make up her mind was not something he wanted to do right now; he had a nap to get back to!

"Well, you can choose between bulbasaur, charmander, squirtle, chespin, fennekin, and froakie, as I'm sure you already know," he began. "Bulbasaur and chespin are grass types, charmander and fennekin are fire, and squirtle and froakie are water. Froakie is known for its speed, fennekin for its special defense and special attack, chespin for its defense and attack, squirtle for defense and special defense, charmander for speed, and bulbasaur for special attack and special defense. Grass Pokémon are the easiest to raise, and fire types are the hardest and tend to be more temperamental. Bulbasaur is grass and poison typed, chespin evolves into a grass and fighting, charmander into fire and flying, fennekin into fire and psychic, squirtle stays water, froakie evolves into water and dark.

Avendal could not help but laugh as the lab assistant began to reel off a list of the Pokémon that she could choose between, their types and strongest stats. All of it was a little too fast for her to process, but fortunately she had put a lot of effort into studying the six possible starter Pokémon beforehand and knew the majority of what was being explained to her. "Well, yes, I know that," she chuckled, grinning. "It's the actual deciding that's the trouble. I like different things about each of them." She shrugged sheepishly and turned back to studying the pokeballs, as if staring at identical, spherical objects would help her make the choice.

She preferred grass-type and water-type Pokémon to fire-types, but even Charmander and Fennekin were tempting, Charmander especially. Chespin she did not particularly like, so that was one choice ruled out. She pondered for a few moments more and finally narrowed her choice down to either Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Froakie. They each had their strengths and their weaknesses. Avendal shook her head in mock despair and decided to use the method that was a favourite of hers for just such a situation as this. Just wing it and hope for the best. "Bulbasaur, then," she finally announced. She had picked now and would not change her mind, for better or for worse.

"...oh," said the assistant when Avendal said that she had known all of this already. "Well then." He huffed and straightened his coat a bit, as if it would shrug off the embarrassment he was feeling. The man gingerly picked up the requested pokeball and handed it to the girl. "Here you go, this is your bulbasaur. You can name it, if you choose. Let me just put the rest of the things you'll need together before you go."

He turned around and snatched up a few items, programming the pokédex and pokégear with Avendal's information before placing them and some other things in a bag and handing it to her. "There you are. Just a few things you might find useful, along with some necessary technology. I'm sure you know how to use it. That's all you need, then. You're all set up and registered."

Congratulations! You are now a trainer!

Avendal felt more than a little sheepish as it struck her that she might have annoyed the young man who was trying to help her. She had come into the lab, disturbed him from whatever important work that he had been doing, and now she had acted as if she was a know-it-all when he had only been explaining what he thought she needed to know. "Sorry if I upset you," she apologised. She could not help grinning from ear to ear when she was offered the pokeball, however. "Thank you, sir!" She accepted the spherical object and smiled down at it briefly. "What should we call you, eh?" she asked, talking to the Bulbasaur inside or herself if the little creature could not hear her. "Ah well, I'm sure we'll think of something on our journey, anyway." Naming was important and she could take her sweet time over that if she wanted to.

She looked through the things that she had been given, committing them to her mind. "Thank you very much, sir. I'm sure I'll figure out how to use them if there's anything I don't know already." There she went again, sounding like a know-it-all. She was really going to have to watch her mouth on this journey. "Guess I'll head back home and show my family my new partner then." She had heard that the Pokémon around the area she lived were at a lower level than elsewhere and she knew that there was a Gym at her own city. But she wanted to go and explore the other places too, the places that lay beyond Santalune in the direction that led away from Lumiose City. That could be the start of her grand adventure with her new friend. "If that's everything that needs to be done then I guess I'll be heading off now, then," she said to the assistant. "Thank you very much for everything."
