Let's Get It Started!

It had been pretty early in the morning when Jensen Oliver had set out on her journey from Cyllage to Lumiose City, but by the time she reached her destination, the sun was high in the sky and beating down on her like an abusive partner. She wasn't sure why she had thought it would be a good idea to leave her bike at home and walk all the way to the city; perhaps she thought it would be great exercise, or a nice change of pace. Well, it was certainly a change of pace- a much slower change, and much more exhausting. Sweat was dripping from her skin as she stepped onto South Boulevard and made her way toward the Pokémon lab.
"It's like a million and three degrees out here," the girl grumbled to herself as she tried to create a small breeze with her cap. She trudged up the steps to the lab, continuing to mutter under her breath the entire way. After what felt like an eternity to her aching calves, Jensen reached the door and let herself inside.
"Yo, anyone around? Wannabe trainer here, need a Pokémon, how do I sign up?" she called, looking around for an assistant that didn't look too busy to help her. Despite how tired she was from the walk here, she was itching to get going on her journey, and the excitement was like fire in her veins. Jensen bounced on the balls of her feet while she waited. She even knew exactly what she wanted! She had waited so long for this moment, and it was time to get the show on the road!

Upon hearing the sound of the laboratory door opening, an assistant who had been inspecting an oddly-shaped stone spun around, causing her white lab coat to twirl around at her shins. She set the stone down on the nearby table and briskly approached the newcomer--who had very loudly made her presence clear--pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose in a condescending manner. Looking down at the eager but exhausted-looking girl, she smirked subtly, letting out a soft snort as she judged her.

"Looking to 'sign up', are you?" the assistant asked, motioning for the young trainer-to-be to follow her. "Come with me."

As she lead the youngster towards the back of the room her shoes made a brisk clacking against the tiles, cooled by the facility's air conditioning, as if to further punctuate her sharp words. She halted at a large machine, lined with six pokeballs sitting in sockets shaped specially for them. Tapping one, a button was activated that brought a Pokémon's picture up on the screen above the display, and before even waiting for the girl to reply she sighed.

"It's not that special. They have these contraptions at every Pokémon center, so they'll get old pretty fast." Her factual tone was demeaning, as if she expected the younger one to be amazed with the contraption so she could show her up with knowledge. "Inside each ball is what we call a starter Pokémon: Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie..." As she named each Pokémon, she tapped on its respective ball to bring its image up on the screen, but she was cycling through them awfully quickly. "...Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle. After you pick which one you want to take with you, you'll receive your starter kit full of items." She pushed up her glasses once more. "And once you choose one, you can't trade it back for a different one! Sheesh."

Jensen knew that she didn't like this assistant as soon as the lady walked up to her. The way she walked, her glasses, the look in her eyes; yeah, this egghead was not someone Jensen wanted to be around for very long. It was a good thing she had decided a long time ago what she wanted, because she did not want to spend more time here than she had to.

The assistant led her to a machine that held pokeballs and displayed the images of the Pokémon inside. She talked to Jensen like she was an idiot and had no idea how any of this worked or what Pokémon even were. Jensen frowned, her eyebrows coming together in the center of her forehead. What does she take me for, a two-year-old? I went to school, lady! she thought, agitated. She hardly had the patience to listen to everything the assistant was saying.

"I know, I know!" Jensen exclaimed, tapping her foot in aggravation. "I know how these things work and I know all about the Pokémon- don't you think I knew enough to do the research before coming here? Jeez, lady! I'm not a stupid kid. I want a chespin, and I know what it is, so you don't have to explain any of it to me."

The assistant hardly seemed fazed. She shrugged and looked off towards a flickering light in the ceiling, drumming her short, painted fingernails on the side of the machine doubtfully. "I'm sure you do know, bright eyes. Just like every other trainer who's come through this door."

She gave another mild grin and picked up the first ball in the machine, scrutinizing it as she turned it in her fingertips. Its glossy red and white coating gleamed brightly underneath the bright laboratory lighting, which seemed to make the entire orb glow like crystal. The woman spent a solid few seconds doing this, but as much as she wanted to torture the young impatient girl, she did not feel like dealing with her for too long, either. With a skillful flick of the wrist, she tossed the Poké ball into the air, sending out a diminutive green and brown, furred Pokémon. The assistant then handed the ball to the youngster, giving her some time to meet her new partner before handing her a starting kit.

"Whoop-de-dingle-doo, you're now officially a trainer," she said, feigning excitement (although by the tone of her voice, there was a light chance it could have been genuine). "You're free to give your Chespin a nickname, should you choose."

This lady sure liked to take her time, and Jensen could sense she was doing it on purpose. The girl was getting more and more impatient and tense as the assistant more or less teased her, before finally releasing the chespin and handing Jensen her starter pack. The chespin was small and cute, and only shook his head a little once released. Otherwise, he remained still and patient, looking up at the humans and waiting to see what was happening. Jensen hoped that meant that the Pokémon would be well behaved and listen to her all the time; she didn't want to spend a lot of time obedience training when there was strength training to do.

"Valiant," said the new trainer. "That's your name, squirt. Valiant like a warrior, 'cause that's what you're gonna be. Best live up to it, got it?"

The chespin, newly named Valiant, seemed a bit surprised by such a sudden, large demand. Somewhat flustered, he nodded, aiming to please his new trainer. Jensen broke out into a huge grin and lifted him onto her shoulder. "Excellent! We're gonna get along swell, pal. Now let's hit the road, it's too stuffy in here."

Jensen glanced pointedly at the assistant before turning on her heel and hurrying out of the lab.
